In the fall of 2008, I wrote the following (2008: A Reprise of 1976?). It seems timely to reproduce it today:

Upon taking office, the Carter administration began a steady drift to the right. Following the lead of Democratic Party strategist, Patrick Caddell, Carter chose a business-friendly approach that placed the battle against inflation at the center of domestic policy. His personal opposition to the Humphrey-Hawkins bill led to the passage of a bill unsatisfactory to organized labor. National health care was shelved and tax reform was never achieved. Carter vetoed public works legislation as inflationary. The neo-liberal deregulation agenda generally attributed to the ultra-right actually began with Carter’s deregulation of the airline industry in 1978. He also started the process of deregulation of other industries, such as communications, oil and finance.

Debt hysteria is undoubtedly the most disgusting, lie-infested scam since George W. Bush launched his propaganda blitz leading up to the unprovoked invasion of Iraq. Like the Bush offensive, the debt scam has drawn public attention away from the critical issues facing the world - especially working people - at this critical moment. Unlike the Bush-era deceptions, debt hysteria has thoroughly infected policy throughout the world.

I have slogged through uncountable commentaries on the mid-term elections. Many have offered useful insights on an event that will no doubt shape the political direction of the next two years. Yet, there is little to surprise in the outcome for anyone following recent and long-term developments in the US political system.

As the number of Debt Commissions multiplies and media gasbags generate hurricane-like forces and hysterical fears of government insolvency, I’ve decided to surrender to the madness and propose a fresh, creative approach to debt reduction. My approach has the added value of requiring no budget cuts or tax increases. Instead, the solution will be found in cutting waste and acquiring new revenue sources hitherto unexplored.

La crisis que siempre es generada por empresarios y banqueros, ha significado durante este último año una ocasión de oro que sus gobiernos títeres europeos están aprovechando para arremeter con ferocidad contra los trabajadores.

 

El mayor tijeretazo de los derechos sociales en estos años de falsa democracia ha rebajado los salarios de los funcionarios un 5%, ha eliminado el cheque-bebé o congelado las pensiones de miseria de los jubilados, teniendo en cuenta que casi el 70% son inferiores a 600 euros/mes.

El dictador Franco habнa fallecido, pero su voluntad de dar fin a su dictadura sin dejar ningъn cabo sin atar, siendo nombrado un monarca que innumerables ocasiones juro su fidelidad a las leyes del ‘’movimiento nacional’’ y que fue educado bajo la tutela del mismo caudillo. No en vano, en su mismo discurso de proclamaciуn, Juan Carlos de Borbуn afirmarнa sin ningъn tipo de pudor: ‘’El nombre de Francisco Franco serб ya un jalуn del acontecer espaсol y un hito al que serб imposible dejar de referirse para entender la clave de nuestra vida polнtica contemporбnea. Con respeto y gratitud quiero recordar la figura de quien durante tantos aсos asumiу la pesada responsabilidad de conducir la gobernaciуn del Estado’’. La continuidad de la jefatura del estado quedaba, por tanto, garantizada en la figura del monarca Juan Carlos, que reconocнa el buen hacer de Franco durante la dictadura pese a las decenas de miles de muertos, pese a la brutal represiуn contra la clase obrera y a los estudiantes y sus organizaciones, pese a las condenas de muerte, que no mucho antes de pronunciar esas palabras, habнan sido ejecutadas.

The dictator had died, but his desire to end his dictatorship without leaving any place to leave no loose ends, being appointed a monarch who countless times swear their alliance to the "national movement” laws and who was educated under the tutelage of the dictator. Not in vain, in his proclamation speech, Juan Carlos de Borbon affirmed without any shame: "The name of Francisco Franco is now a Spanish milestone that will be impossible not to refer to understand the key of our contemporary political life. With respect and gratitude I want to remember the figure of someone who for many years assumed the hard responsibility of leading the government of the state”. The continuity of the head of state was guaranteed with the figure of the King Juan Carlos, who recognized the good job of Franco during the dictatorship despite the tens of thousands of deaths, despite the brutal repression against the working class and students and their organizations, despite the sentences of death that had been executed not long time before those words.
